What Happens When I Hit My Storage Limit
Every ShopStable plan includes a media storage allowance. When you reach that allowance, the next upload is blocked. This article walks through exactly what you'll see and how to get back to uploading.
What you'll see when you hit the limit
When you try to upload a new image and there isn't room for it, the upload form switches to a red panel that says:
Storage limit reached. Upgrade your plan or remove existing media to continue uploading.
You'll see two options:
- Upgrade plan — opens your subscription settings so you can move to a larger plan
- Choose a Different Image — closes the panel; nothing was uploaded
Your existing images are not affected. Everything that's already on your site keeps working exactly as it did before. The limit only stops new uploads.
Why we count the way we do
Every image you upload is stored twice on our servers: the optimized display copy that your visitors see, plus a private original that we keep so you can re-crop or change the focal point later without re-uploading. Both copies count toward your limit. See Understanding Your Storage Usage for the full breakdown.
How to get back under your limit
You've got two paths.
1. Delete images you don't need
Find images you're no longer using — old promotional graphics, replaced product photos, abandoned drafts — and trash them:
- Open My Media in your dashboard or any image picker
- Hover an image to reveal the trash icon, click it
- Your storage usage drops immediately
Deleted items stay recoverable for 30 days in case you change your mind. Once you're under the cap, your next upload will go through normally.
2. Upgrade to a plan with more storage
If your business legitimately needs more space, upgrading is one click:
- Open Account → Subscription
- Pick a plan with a larger storage allowance
- The limit lifts immediately — no need to wait for the next billing cycle
If you were grandfathered onto a plan that no longer has the allowance you expected, the system won't delete anything you've already uploaded. You'll just be blocked from uploading more until you free up space or move to a plan that fits.
A note on appeals
If your storage was full and you uploaded something that would have gone through, the upload was rejected before it ever reached our content checks. There's nothing to appeal — just free up space or upgrade and try again.
